JESUS: SON OF DAVID, LORD OF ALL
Gospel Reflection: Mark 12:35-37
| 35 And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36 David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, declared, `The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I put your enemies under your feet.’ 37 David himself calls him Lord; so how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly. |
Beyond Earthly Expectations: The True Nature of the Messiah
The world is perpetually searching for a ruler—someone to establish justice, bring lasting peace, and provide security. The people of Israel held this same longing. They anticipated a Messiah who would be a political and military leader from the royal line of David, restoring the earthly glory of their nation.
Yet, Jesus challenges this narrow perception. By quoting Psalm 110, He reveals a profound mystery: the Messiah is not merely an earthly king or a distant descendant of David. He is the Son of God, existing eternally with the Father. Jesus does not come to govern territories or enforce political entitlements; He comes to rule over the human heart. His kingdom is one of truth, grace, and liberation—freeing us from the ultimate tyrannies of sin, ego, and despair.
The Challenge of Submission: What Does “Jesus is Lord” Mean?
St. Paul reminds us that no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3). Acknowledging the Lordship of Christ is not a mere statement of faith; it is an act of total surrender.
In our daily lives, we are often ruled by silent masters: the pursuit of wealth, the fear of judgment, or the weight of our own addictions. To declare “Jesus is Lord” is to invite Him to take the throne of our lives—to guide our thoughts, heal our relationships, and govern our actions. It is a transition from living by our own limited strength to living under the sovereignty of the King of Kings.
A Prayer for Surrender
Lord Jesus, I believe that You are the Messiah, the Son of David, and the Son of God. You are my Lord. I willingly submit my heart, my mind, my home, and my work to Your reign. Be the King of my life today, and help me to walk in the freedom of Your truth. Amen.
Insights from the Early Church: St. Cyril of Alexandria
“How is the Son of David also David’s Lord? It is because the Word, as God, sprang from the very substance of the Father. He became flesh and man, perfectly and yet without departing from the incomparable excellence of the divine dignity. He is David’s Lord according to His divine glory, and he is his son according to the flesh.” — Commentary on Luke, Homily 137
